Rattan Rambles
41.5” x 41.5” x 2” framed
block-printed paper quilt
To those moments of sitting on your friend’s or neighbor’s old vintage rattan chairs that you thrifted together, just “talking story” for hours.
If you look closely you will see places where the hand-printed strips are removed and then replaced out of order, disrupting the pattern. This is not only to give the look of a loved re-caned chair but also to represent the patterns of a rich friendly ramble… where you were going in one direction but an exciting sidenote takes over hijacking the focus of conversation.
For the subject, I chose hibiscus, a popular Hawaiian rattan print but continued the comforting warm palette of the rest of the “Natural Comforts” series.
The prayer woven into “Rattan Rambles” is for the people of Lahaina and Kula who not only lost their homes but also their friend’s homes…that they will once again have places to kick their feet up and have rambling conversations with their loved ones.
